American Friends of Magen David Adom-ARMDI is celebrating its 69th year of supporting
Magen David Adom, Israel's equivalent to the Red Cross.
- Magen David Adom (MDA) and its team of trained volunteer and professional medical responders provides the entire nation's pre-hospital emergency medical needs, including disaster, ambulance and blood services.
- AFMDA raised over $32 million to build the MDA National Blood Services Center in Ramat Gan in the mid 1980s. This institution ensures that Israel's healthcare providers have enough blood to save lives: MDA provides 100% of the blood requirements of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and 95% of the blood needs of Israeli hospitals and the general population.
- AFMDA has raised over $100 million in the last four years to build or renovate MDA Stations, provide emergency vehicles and blood mobiles, purchase medical supplies, sustain the MDA National Blood Services Center, and more.
- 47 ambulances were provided by AFMDA to Magen David Adom in Israel in 2006: 36 standard (Basic Life Support) ambulances, 10 Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICUs) and one armored ambulance.
- AFMDA provided 64 emergency vehicles to Magen David Adom in 2007: 32 standard ambulances, 30 MICUs and 2 Blood Mobiles.
- In 2008, AFMDA sent 41 emergency vehicles to MDA Israel: 22 standard ambulances and 19 MICUs.
- Thanks to AFMDA supporters, 700 MDA ambulances travel over 6.75 million miles a year, answering over 500,000 calls annually.
- MDA answers calls for all types of accidents, medical emergencies and terror attacks.
- MDA has over 100 Emergency Medical Stations and 11 dispatch stations in communities throughout Iarael. Many of these have been built or upgraded by American Friends of Magen David Adom.
- With AFMDA support, all MDA Station personnel undergo training every year in order to keep their skills current. MDA also trains over 50,000 people a year in first aid basics and more sophisticated paramedical skills.
- AFMDA has built the Nancy L. Caroline Medical Library in the MDA Ramat Gan Station, the primary facility used for training Magen David Adom personnel. It serves as an important resource for MDA, with journals, video and Internet access.
- During the Gaza War in December 2008-January 2009 MDA was well equipped to handle emergencies, thanks to the recent activity of American Friends of Magen David Adom in the western Negev, Negev and coastal areas. On March 30, 2008, AFMDA dedicated the new MDA Sderot Emergency Medical Station named in memory of Judy Kaplan of New York and Esther and Hyman Rapport of Cleveland. AFMDA also built the new Natalie and Manny Charach MDA Ashdod Emergency Medical Station in Ashdod, which was a special project of the John J. Mames Chapter - Michigan Region, dedicated in May 2007. Other MDA Stations in areas targeted by Hamas rockets which have been extensively renovated and modernized by AFMDA are Beer Sheva, Kiryat Gat and Rehovot.
