MDA RACES TO THE SCENE AS GRAD ROCKET SLAMS INTO CENTRAL ASHKELON SHOPPING MALL

Magen David Adom paramedics raced to the Hutzot Shopping Mall in central Ashkelon on Wednesday, May 14 following a direct hit by a Grad rocket, fired from the Gaza Strip just before 6 pm local time.  MDA paramedics dispatched to the scene fought to extract those trapped under large pieces of debris, including four people who were evacuated in serious condition, including a mother and her 2-year-old daughter, and 11 more who suffered from moderate wounds.  MDA also treated 62 people for shock at the scene. The Salah al--Din Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place just as US Presdient George Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert were sitting down to an intense two-hour meeting in Jerusalem.

Because of last week's Yom Ha'atzmaut holiday and the increased rocket fire from Gaza, Magen David Adom rescue services have gone on highest alert in communities surrounding the Gaza Strip.

THE BEST GIFT TO BRING BACK FROM ISRAEL IS THE ONE YOU'LL LEAVE BEHIND.  SEE SCHEDULE!

On May 14, marking the 60th anniversary of Israel’s declaration of independence; the American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) hosted a blood drive for tourists with the Christian Friends of Israel in Jerusalem. Thirty units of blood were collected, helping AFMDA surpass the 600 unit mark collected, so far, in 2008. The 500th unit for 2008 was collected this week as well. In 2007, it took AFMDA six months longer to reach this milestone.  Four days earlier, during a blood drive at Michlelet Esther Seminary in Jerusalem, AFMDA blood collections for 2008 passed the 500 unit mark.
